On Saturday, 10 May, Gratowisko Poznań Wschód turned into a real capital of bees! All thanks to the third edition of a unique event to mark World Bee Day.
The event was organised by the Waste Management Plant in Poznań. Among the participants was also the Edu4Eco portal, which actively supports environmental protection and environmental education activities.

Why are bees so important?
World Bee Day was established by the United Nations (UN) and is celebrated on 20 May every year, with the aim of reminding people of the important role these insects play in nature. It is with their help that most plants are pollinated. Their work affects biodiversity and a decline in the number of bees can have visible ecological consequences. This is why it is important to raise people's awareness of the crucial role of bees in the ecosystem and to inspire action to protect these beneficial insects.

Did you know that.
In order to produce 1 kilogram of honey, bees have to gather nectar from several hundred thousand flowers - their number can reach up to 4 million! One honeybee visits several hundred flowers in a day and its flight speed can reach up to 24 km/h!
Education through play
The event, held at Poznań's Gratowisko, was a real treasure trove of knowledge about bees and their invaluable role in our ecosystem. Participants were able to see a live beehive, which gave them a close-up look at the life of these fascinating insects. There were also beekeeping workshops on site, where children and adults could try their hand at being beekeepers. There was also fresh honey tasting!
By far the biggest excitement came from a unique apiary made from recycled materials - beehives made from washing machine drums. This is a great example of giving a second life to unnecessary objects.

Together for nature
World Bee Day is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the importance of biodiversity on our planet. Events such as this prove that environmental education can be interesting and engaging - especially when combined with fun.
Representatives of the Edu4Eco portal were happy to support the event and actively participate in promoting knowledge about bee protection. We were happy to talk to participants about ecology, sharing practical tips that make it easier to protect the environment on a daily basis.
