Did you know that the average Pole uses around 150 litres of water every day? Of which only 3 per cent is used for drinking and cooking. So what about the other 97 per cent? Well, we use 36 per cent for maintaining our hygiene, an additional 30 per cent for flushing the toilet, and then: 15 per cent for laundry, 10 per cent for washing dishes and 6 per cent for cleaning. This is an opportune moment to rethink our water use to take care of our environment, but also our wallet.

So how do you do it? There are several solutions!

  1. Choose showers over baths. You will use around 200 litres of water when bathing, while you will only use 60 litres for a shower - assuming you turn off the tap while soaping.
  2. Turn off the water when brushing your teeth. When brushing your teeth for three minutes with the tap turned off, you lose around 15 litres of water.
  3. Invest in a dishwasher. Fact - it's an expensive investment, but it will pay for itself quicker than you think. You use around 80 litres of water to wash the dishes that fill your sink, while your dishwasher will wash the same amount of dishes using around 15 litres.
  4. Only turn on the washing machine and dishwasher when they are full. This sensible solution also saves energy.
  5. Seal cisterns and taps. One leaking tap means an annual loss of up to 5,000 litres of clean water. Therefore, it is high time to check whether water is dripping from anything in our house.
  6. Install water-efficient cisterns. You can already find cisterns in every shop with a split flush - 3 litres or 6 litres of water. Then you have control over how much water you actually use.

These are our original TOP 6 actions that you can start implementing today. It will probably be difficult at first to get used to some of the behaviours, such as turning off the water, but they will only bring positive results. Get to work!
