Green library: Nadia and Paul on the trail of eco-puzzles. How to fight for a better planet every day?
Most of us know that taking care of our planet is important. We want to teach children to care about the environment from an early age. One idea for this is to read books together that deal with topics related to its protection. We adults can often learn a lot of interesting facts from them too. There are so many books available on the market - how do you know which ones to choose?
Most of us know that taking care of our planet is important. We want to teach children to care about the environment from an early age. One idea for this is to read books together that deal with topics related to its protection. We adults can often learn a lot of interesting facts from them too. There are so many books available on the market - how do you know which ones to choose?
We come to your aid and open our review series with this article: "Green Library". We will go from fairy tales, to atlases and albums, to popular science items. We will explore books for younger and older children, but also for teenagers.
I am eco, or how to explain difficult and important things in an accessible way
Here is the first book we want to recommend: "I am eco. I can save the world too!" by Sylwia Majcher. An interesting position in which the narrative is guided by the Earth. This one explains in an accessible way to the reader what will happen if we don't start taking care of it. Together with the siblings Nadia and Paul and their parents, we learn about various important problems for the Earth. Each issue is a different chapter - we can learn, among other things, how to reduce our carbon footprint, how to separate waste properly, how to save water or how not to waste food.
The book is very nicely illustrated and written in accessible language. According to what we can read on the publisher's website, it is aimed at a reader from 6-8 years old. I think it is valuable material that teachers can use in their classes at school when talking about ecology, e.g. on Earth Day.
Not just reading - on the road to a green master's degree
One of the great strengths of the book are the tasks and challenges that the Earth presents to Nadia and Paul, but also to the readers. These include, for example, going shopping without plastic, writing down ways to save water or finding an eatery in our immediate area. Through such activities, it is easier for children to understand that the problem does not concern other people, but also us, and that we can have a positive impact on the environment through our actions and everyday decisions. Interestingly, a green leaf can be won for each task completed, and at the end there is a green champion's diploma.
"Now I'm explaining to you what my problems stem from, because if you understand this, it will be easier for me to help you," is a passage from the book that perfectly reflects the style in which it is written.
Let us also remember that we are our children's role models and that reading alone, although valuable, is not enough. We should, by our behaviour and everyday choices, encourage our children to take care of our planet.
