The Vistula district is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the capital. It attracts not only residents but also tourists. Beaches, green areas, restaurants, club and sports clubs, places for outdoor recreation - these are just some of the attractions that await us in this part of the city.
The Vistula River, the heart of Warsaw's informal 19th district, is not only the centre of urban life, but also the starting point for extensive environmental protection measures.

Ecology on the Vistula - greenery and cleanliness as priorities
The Vistula Quarter regularly hosts events that promote environmental ideas, from workshops to riverbank clean-up events. These activities are aimed at residents, businesses and tourists alike, who have the opportunity to take part in clean-up actions, plant plants, refresh spaces or participate in workshops on nature conservation.
It is worth mentioning that due to the nature of the area, the local authorities take care to preserve the natural character of the Vistula banks. The designation of recreational paths, the introduction of waste collection systems or rubbish segregation are activities that effectively reduce pollution in the area. One of the most recent such actions in the area was the cleaning of the Vistula River from a boat, during which volunteers collected more than three tonnes of rubbish on Saturdays in December. As we can read on the Vistula District's Facebook profile, "the crews had to face not only the waste and the heartache it causes, but also the winter greyness, fog, rain and even frost."
In a similar vein, most of the city's events along the river are being implemented. The Vistula District has a project called Warszawski Plażowy (Warsaw Beach), where rubbish bags and ecological ashtrays are available throughout the holidays to take care of your favourite leisure spot. Each of the Sunday meetings in November and December during the Vistula Quarter Walrus School is also preceded by a joint clean-up involving the participants in the cold-water baths. These examples show that, thanks to educational initiatives, the involvement of residents and representatives of responsible business in green volunteering, the Vistula is becoming an increasingly ecological space, connecting nature with the city.

Educational campaigns - building environmental awareness
Environmental education is one of the pillars of the Vistula District's campaign activities. Numerous workshops are organised to raise the environmental awareness of residents. The creation of the Stone Education Pavilion has made it possible to broaden activities, providing a place to create workshops, debates, exhibitions or nature walks. There, children and young people learn the importance of caring for nature and how they can contribute to improving the environment on a daily basis. Current themes focus on the Winter and Summer in the City actions, where schools and kindergartens can sign up for activities with the theme: "Tenderly about beavers", "Conifers winter hardy" and "How nature rests". As part of the new Skrzydlata Dzielnica Wisła action series, ornithological walks are organised, during which birds can be observed live and experts tell many interesting facts about them. This is an ideal opportunity to take a walk along the floodplain meadows in the natural space between the Vistula embankments and, at the same time, to broaden your knowledge of local fauna and flora.
For adult residents, meetings are organised with experts in ecology, hydrology or dendrology, who share their knowledge of sustainable development, energy efficiency or biodiversity protection. The educational offer is extended to include artistic and cultural activities, which in their themes also touch on the natural resources of the Vistula. These types of activities are aimed at activating the local community and encouraging them to make informed decisions in favour of the environment.
Green riverside areas - similar initiatives in other cities
The environmental initiatives in Warsaw's Vistula Quarter are not the only example of such activities in Polish cities. Many cities are making efforts to improve the quality of life of their residents by promoting sustainable development and involving local communities in environmental protection campaigns. An excellent example of similar activities is Poznań.
Wartostrada in Poznań is a space along the Warta River that, like the Vistula, attracts nature lovers, tourists and city residents. Wartostrada is not only a beautiful walking and cycling route, but also a place where numerous events take place, including those that promote ecological attitudes. These include clean-up campaigns, environmental picnics and educational activities for children and adults.
Out-of-the-box ideas make visitors to the area curious about new initiatives. Examples are the inscriptions on the containers located on the Wartostrada, such as: "Manager help yourself to a bottle", "I feel so empty inside" or "By throwing one bottle here, you burn 19 calories. Be fit!" . The waste management company in Poznań, which is the originator of this initiative, wanted to encourage people spending their free time at the Warta River in a humorous way to clean up after themselves and thus take care of the common space.

Working together for a clean environment
The Vistula Quarter, like the Wartostrada in Poznań, exemplifies the importance of local environmental initiatives in cities.
- 'Undeniably, local government initiatives should leave space and inspire social action to stimulate shared responsibility for shared areas and raise awareness of the natural heritage of cities,' says Jan Piotrowski, Plenipotentiary of the Mayor of Warsaw for the Vistula River.
Sustainability, ecology and education are the foundations of the activities undertaken in Warsaw and other cities. Such initiatives make it possible not only to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants, but also to create a space where nature and the city coexist in harmony.
