Holidays encourage us to spend time outdoors, but sometimes instead of the hustle and bustle of the city, heated streets and buildings or crowded beaches, we would prefer to choose a quieter and more colourful place. This is what botanical gardens offer us. For the most part, they are run by universities and their history dates back to antiquity. It was then that the first gardens were created to study botany and cultivate plants with health-promoting properties. 

Explore the value and diversity of botanical gardens: conservation, research and education

A botanical garden is a specially designed and dedicated place of a scientific, research and educational nature in which a variety of plant species are collected, cultivated and displayed. 

Among them, we can distinguish arboreta, or dendrological gardens (composed of trees and shrubs), or herbaria, or gardens of medicinal plants. Many botanical gardens have greenhouses where we can admire tropical plants. Some have ponds or ponds where we can observe aquatic plants

Why do botanical gardens actually exist? Their main tasks are:

1. Species protection - preserving rare and endangered plant species, as they play a key role in biodiversity conservation.
2. Scientific research - conducting research on plants and their properties, discovering new species, studying the medicinal properties of plants and developing strategies to protect endangered species.
3. Education - gardens allow us to learn about native plant species as well as those from other areas of the globe, from other climatic zones. Most gardens offer us tours, workshops or various educational programmes.

A botanical garden, as you can see, is different from a park or forest because, unlike them, it focuses on a variety of plants, from many climatic zones, including those threatened with extinction. It is also a more scientific or educational place than a forest or park.
